Book Review: Faking It by Beth Reekles

From New York Times bestseller Beth Reekles comes Faking It, a delightful, contemporary romance about looking for love and getting caught between fiction and reality.
Faking It by Beth Reekles
Lifelong singleton Sophie is facing a year of events celebrating her friends and family settling down: bachelorette and engagement parties, weddings, and baby showers. And despite a string of failed dates behind her–everything from “it‘s not you, it’s me” to only seeing each other when it suits him to total ghosting–she just can’t seem to stay away from dating apps and hopes to find love just like everyone else. But when she lies about having a plus-one for her sister’s wedding, Sophie’s only solution is to enlist a fake boyfriend. Enter the sexy and charming Harry. He agrees to help her save face in front of her family, if she’ll help him look good to his friends after the recent implosion of his marriage.
Their chemistry is undeniable, but even if Sophie has sparks with Harry, they’re both just using their fake relationship to hide from their own problems. Can she continue lying to her family and friends? And how will everyone react when they see themselves reflected in her column? Soul-searching comes with consequences, and there might not be a picture-perfect “happily ever after,” but maybe there’s something even better.
Book Review
I received an advance review copy from @wbywattpadbooks on @netgalley for my honest review. Fake dating is my absolute favorite trope and I knew Reekles would not disappoint!
“Faking It” by Beth Reekles is a charming and heartfelt contemporary romance that navigates the complexities of modern dating and the pressures of societal expectations. It is so well written, I found it hard to put it down!
Sophie, a perpetual singleton surrounded by friends settling down, finds herself in a bind when she fabricates a boyfriend to save face at her sister’s wedding. Enter Harry, the handsome and charismatic accomplice in her ruse, whose own motivations add an intriguing layer to their fake relationship.
Reekles crafts a relatable and engaging story filled with humor, genuine emotion, and palpable chemistry between Sophie and Harry. Their journey from reluctant partners to genuine friends is portrayed with sensitivity, exploring themes of self-discovery and the blurred lines between fiction and reality. The characters are well-developed, each grappling with personal insecurities and past disappointments that add depth to their interactions.
While the premise is familiar, Reekles injects freshness through a twisty ending, witty dialogue, and authentic portrayals of familial and romantic dynamics. “Faking It” is a delightful read that reminds us that sometimes the best relationships are the ones we least expect.
