Godzilla King of Monsters: A No-Spoiler Review

Legendary Films’ Godzilla: King of Monsters hits theaters Thursday and we were lucky enough to snag a sneak peek thanks to our friends at Allied Phoenix! We took the big boys along with us because let’s face it, they’re HUGE Godzilla fans. Classic Godzilla, 2014 Godzilla, they love it all. And they were SO excited for this film.

Godzilla: War of Monsters

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

We all really enjoyed the movie from beginning to end. The boys didn’t stop hitting us throughout the movie, excited about what they were seeing. And at the end of it all, we would HIGHLY recommend seeing the movie. Here are our top 5 reasons why:

If you watched the 2014 Godzilla, the main critique was that it needed MORE action. I personally loved the movie an we have seen it a number of times, but even I 100% agree with that assessment. Now you will NOT have that complaint of this movie. There was so. much. intense. action. I had to remind myself to breathe at times!

Oh how I loved the introduction of MORE monsters into this film! Now it’s not a spoiler because you can see the trailer posters of Ghidora, Mothra and Rodan, but I have to say it was exciting to see where the saga is taking us and it means MORE titans! I’m all for it.

You guys, I was blown away by the special effects surrounding the monsters in the film. It was 2014 Godzilla times 100. And I feel like that’s something to note in sci-fi movies these days because we’ve seen it all, so what is really impressive anymore? But I have to say I was impressed. Sights, sounds, I was sucked into the world of titans.

Now I’ve heard some naysayers saying that they didn’t like that there was a “human storyline” to the film but I have to say that my thoughts are quite the contrary. I love a good monster movie, special effects and more…but I also appreciate an interesting intertwining story. I don’t think the human aspect takes away from the titans at all.

For the old-school Godzilla fan, there might be a few nuggets in the film for you. There were some moments that definitely had us nudging each other, always makes for a fun modern film when the writers acknowledge material the fans would enjoy.

GO SEE IT. Like I said, there are others out there who have complaints but WE are not one of them. We loved it, the kids loved it. I enjoyed the 2014 film and I thought this one was BETTER.

The film is rated PG-13 for sequences of monster action violence and destruction, and for some language. I knew that my boys would be ok, because they have seen plenty of Godzilla films and they have a good grasp on the fact that it’s fiction. However, for the most part I would agree with the 13-year old rating. The film is pretty intense, so if you have sensitive kiddos I would definitely recommend viewing it for yourself before including them.

See it this weekend and let us know what you think!
